Address Book

I have given up trying to understand how the address book system works.
Information such as"Uses the Gnome-Card" tells me nothing. Can someone
explain or point me to information on HOW to set up the address book so
that it works.? Balsa is a very neat mailer, but the address book system
detracts from it's usefulness. Thanks for any help.
