I assume you're using dia on Windows.
Old dia files as well as the samples should open fine
with Hans's latest version. I've just tested it.
Maybe something went wrong during the installation.
You may want to try out the new version 0.89pre1 of 
the dia Win32 installer available now from

http://dia-installer.sourceforge.net
You should remove any old version of dia that was
installed before attempting the installation.
