Andrey,

Yes, I can open the .png images with at least the following programs:
Dolphin, Gwenview, Iceape Navigator, Iceweasel, Krita, GIMP, Okular.

HOWEVER, when trying to open in Inkscape, I get a failure message 
similar to the one I get in dia.

Mike,

I agree that it is my installation that is at fault.  Later today, I'll 
try installing dia on another computer here running essentially the same 
OS.  I'm betting it will install and operate OK.

It could be I removed some file in ignorance or an unlikely case where I 
have a corrupted file.  Or a remote possibility that the Debian (Wheezy) 
package has a bug.  Thanks for your efforts to help.

TO OTHERS who may be reading this:

I still need help on this.  I'm hoping someone who likes to solve 
mysteries such as this one may lend a hand -- I'm willing to try 
anything and report results back.  All efforts appreciated.
