If you would like to add more connection points, you have two choices:

* Edit the XML source of the shape file. Information about the XML file 
can be found
for example under http://dia-installer.de/doc/en/custom-shapes-chapter.html

* Add more objects to your shape

If you prefer the image object behavior, why don't you use image objects?
