And, doesn't the new webkit backend emphasize the need to dump about:config entirely and use only gconf?

It's something that we simply inherit from Mozilla. Some useful settings
from about:config are actually mirrored in Gconf (for
example /apps/epiphany/web/smooth_scroll), but I don't think we would
gain much by mirroring all of them. It would become a jungle.
About:config is currently a jungle.

Taking only the relevant banana trees from that jungle and putting them into gconf, while it increases the number of gconf options, would be great usability nonetheless. And about:config could instead point to a semi-blank page saying "no, use gconf-editor!"

I'm not even sure it's possible to dump about:config when you're using the mozilla back-end. In any case, about:config is already unsupported in Epiphany. Some options may work, others won't. You are correct in some instances, but not all. gedit, for example, does put in " - gedit" in the titlebar. I create far too many of them, and I always regret it a year down the line when my list of bookmarks is ten times taller than my screen. A habit I have with bookmarks is to create one for literally every page I visit that I may look at again, just so I can get to it simply by typing a quick word in the address bar rather than a URL. (Another hope there is that some day a desktop search engine will grab keywords from that web page's content and meta data so the bookmarks work as a good representation of everything I am interested in). One way I have solved this is by creating a tag called Miscellaneous, where I put most of my bookmarks to avoid them filling up the main Bookmarks menu. Still, it's quite a mess, and I find it rather unintuitive that I must go through the bookmarking dialog for all of these pages. Firefox 3 is doing this quite well by putting the bookmarks button right on its address bar. Pressing it once creates a bookmark automatically that stays out of the way, does not need any further input from the user, yet is (in a sense) a bookmark. I think similar functionality would do well with Epiphany, where the tagging system definitely does encourage creating lots and lots of bookmarks. The smooth way in Epiphany of finding bookmarks via the address bar really encourages that, too. The thought in detail. This could be implemented fairly easily, since almost everything we need is already here! -Add a button to quickly bookmark a page. No reason not to mirror Firefox there; theirs is done very well. (One change I think would do well is recognizing when a page is nearby another one - eg., in the same domain - and have the icon reflect it by being slightly illuminated). -First click on the button makes a quick bookmark, which requires no extra interaction. Just creates a bookmark with the current page's title. A second click brings the user to the bookmark dialog for that same bookmark. Problem: Bloated bookmarks menu. -That magical quick bookmark thing could create a new tag for 'not quite important enough' bookmarks. That is, bookmarks created with one click to the button but given no further detail. In this way, the menu is not impossible to navigate except in that one submenu. The fancy address bar can handle the rest :) Methinks this could be implemented as an extension. Does anyone know of nice Epiphany extension examples / documentation? Also, of course, the purpose of this all is to see if someone is already working on this, or if anyone has some suggestions that could make this cooler. Thanks in advance! -Dylan ------=_Part_2648_30844256.1203545858505 Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline I, like many geeks who spend too much time on the Interwebs, love bookmarks.

If so, what are the rationale, as it makes many so called > "web 2.0" apps unusable ? Yes. The rationale is that websites shouldn't be allowed to gain control over what the user can do (for instance, copying an image to the clipboard). If a webapp requires the context menu to be usable, then it really is broken. However, it's undeniable that the number of webapps that use the context menu is on the rise, so something should be done to find a middle road. Recently this was discussed on IRC and most agreed that a whitelist-based system for javascript context menu functionality such as the one already in use for popup blocking would be an acceptable way to solve the problem. > If not, is it a known bug (I didn't find anything in the list archive). It's very rationale and I like "noscript" add'on for firefox. I hate websites which modify context menu. If you use mouses gestures, you hate them so. -- jerome - jerome@aranha.fr From reinouts@gnome.org Fri Feb 29 09:30:56 2008 Return-Path: X-Original-To: epiphany-list@gnome.org Delivered-To: epiphany-list@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4C3A97500F4 for ; Fri, 29 Feb 2008 09:30:56 +0000 (GMT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -1.11 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-1.11 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_05=-1.11] X-Amavis-OS-Fingerprint: Linux 2.4-2.6 (up: 4 hrs), (distance 15, link: ethernet/modem), [208.97.132.207] Received: from menubar.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (menubar.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id Xg3uZ8J1hAH2 for ; Fri, 29 Feb 2008 09:30:47 +0000 (GMT) Received: from randymail-a8.g.dreamhost.com (sd-green-bigip-207.dreamhost.com [208.97.132.207]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F202A75016D for ; Fri, 29 Feb 2008 09:30:41 +0000 (GMT) Received: from [192.168.0.77] (a82-95-119-67.adsl.xs4all.nl [82.95.119.67]) by randymail-a8.g.dreamhost.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 93B28AF8AA for ; Fri, 29 Feb 2008 01:30:39 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: Custom javascript menus From: Reinout van Schouwen To: "epiphany-list@gnome.org" In-Reply-To: <1204225459.6843.3.camel@thorold> References: <1204037080.8758.24.camel@franck-gusty> <1204208526.14522.18.camel@reinout.rotterdam-cs.com> <1204225459.6843.3.camel@thorold> Content-Type: text/plain Organization: GNOME Date: Fri, 29 Feb 2008 10:30:37 +0100 Message-Id: <1204277437.4421.4.camel@reinout.rotterdam-cs.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.12.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-BeenThere: epiphany-list@gnome.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.8 Precedence: list List-Id: For developers and users of the Epiphany web browser List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 29 Feb 2008 09:30:56 -0000 Hi Stephan, (moving discussion back to list) Op donderdag 28-02-2008 om 20:04 uur [tijdzone +0100], schreef Stefan Stuhr: > What about making this kind of context menus (right click events in > javascript) work when users hold down a modifier key while right > clicking, like Ctrl+right click?
