Re: [evolution-patches] Patch to enable cursor and keyboard navigation in mail reader,(v5), gconf version

Hello York,

Thank you very much for all of this work, and your thoughtful
explanation! Having an attached screenshot such as the one that you
provided really helps me to understand what is going on.

The screenshot has a few problems. First, you cannot use the "_E"
accelerator, as it is already used only a few lines above in "Default
character _encoding". Also, the wording on the checkbox needs some
clarification; I already know what the preference means, and I still
didn't understand the text. ;) If we decide to go this route, then we
need to think brainstorm a bit about what clearer labels might be.

But, with all of this said, it seems to me that the menu is still a
better place for this option than the settings dialog. (see more
comments below)

Well, the average user has no reason to know or care what gconf is, or
what settings correspond to gconf keys, right? The only people who know
about gconf keys are either hackers or very very advanced users. So, I
doubt that separating user interface options based on their gconf
dependence will make any particular sense to an average user.

Anyway, if we make this option available in the menus using the "F7"
key, then it will be more easy to quickly turn on and turn off than if
it is in the settings dialog.

Further, it seems to me that many of the options which control how an
email is displayed are listed in the "View" menu. From that menu, one
can:

* turn the preview pane on/off
* change the size of the text
* specify whether or not images are loaded
* specify whether email headers/source should be shown

It makes sense to me, therefore, to put the setting for caret mode in
the same menu, given that it is of similar scope (all these options
allow you to specify how you want to read your email messages.)

What do you think?

Take care,
Anna
