Re: [Geary] [OT] Emojis

Hi Mike,

I'm using Google Messages on both phones, although some of the Marshmallow emojis look different vs Nougat, in which case the Nought equivalent of the Marshmallow emoji will display.

In checking the app version numbers, they both show the same (5.0.062), however there is additional information next to that, which is different.

The Marshmallow phone has: Nixie_RC14_xxhdpi.arm64-v8a.phone

The Nougat phone: Nixie_RC14_xhdpi.armeabi-v7a.phone

(I'm assuming the difference above, is the phone's CPU.)

But sending emojis from one phone to the other, using Google Messages on both ends, they display fine going either way. I have tried multiple e-mail apps in addition to Geary: Thunderbird, BlueMail, Maildroid and saw the same on these three (the broken unicode).

Rather than the emojis, this is what comes through on most e-mail apps: 😃😃😠Geary, on the other hand, doesn't display any of the above, it displays no Marshmallow emojis. It will successfully display the emojis from Nougat though.
To be honest, this sounds like a Unicode bug in the Marshmallow email app you are using to send the emojis. The email apps that display something like what you show above are attempting to display the broken Unicode that was sent, while Geary seems to be cleaning it out before it even gets that far. I'd suggest testing using the same third party email app with known good Unicode support on both Android versions and see what happens. 📱🔨😉
