[gedit-list] pdflatex

gedit under Ubuntu Feitsy on personal laptop

Trying to run pdflatex from within gedit, and then display the pdf file
(evince or acroread)...seems like a simple request...

I probably don't belong here; I am an old, stupid ex-WinXP user, new to
linux, but after a fresh single boot install of Ubuntu 7.04 on Dell
Inspiron 710m I installed TeXLive 2007 from dvd, and then updated
tikz/pgf package (1.18) in TDS compliant manner.

Editing .tex docs in gedit is cool with syntax highlighting; I can
compile and display .tex docs from terminal. When using the external
commands plugin I get all kinds of rejection, some of which seems path
oriented, some is permission, and some is just endless loops:

Running tool: new-tool
/home/crow/.gnome2/gedit/tools/new-tool: 6: pdflatex: not found
Exited: 32512

I am missing something probably linux oriented. BTW am aware of LaTex
plugin for gedit, but would like to be able to make simple calls on my
own first.

Any help for new and lost? More info needed? Thanks,

John
