The approach seems sane though I haven't looked at the patch closely
(sorry no time right now): basically we are storing in gconf the default
value of autospellcheck.

An UI could be done by implementing the create_configure_dialog method
of GeditPlugin (which allows to popup a config dialog from the plugin
selection list)... though just that single option could be a bit ugly in
a dialog.
