Same problem for me as I explain two or three days ago ! I search for
the solution since two weeks and don't find !

You say that for you it works as root and not as a normal user; For me
it doesn't work at all neither for root nor as a normal user. Perhaps
you will find ideas if I show you logs so please see below :

As root the startx command gives :
X: warning; process set to priority -11 instead of requested priority -10

To be more precise, my system is a Debian testing/unstable.
Two or three days ago Michael indicated that it seemed that my ORBit
version was too old but it seems it's not the case since you compiled
from cvs and you encounter te same problem.

Hope these log will give you others ideas. All your suggestions will be
very appreciated !
