I can't honestly tout the code as being very mature yet, it's effectively a two day hack, but it does it's job interestingly good already ;) you may give it a try, or even hack on the code. if it actually prooves to be broadly usable, it may be filling up cvs.gnome.org's harddisk at some point as well. for the moment, http://people.redhat.com/~timj/gerd/ granted Gerd asylum. --- ciaoTJ From miguel@erandi.helixcode.com Mon Jul 3 14:45:34 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: gnome-announce-list@gnome.org Received: from erandi.helixcode.com (erandi.helixcode.com [140.239.238.11]) by mail.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C49572BE02 for ; Mon, 3 Jul 2000 14:45:33 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from miguel@localhost) by erandi.helixcode.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) id KAA22784; Mon, 3 Jul 2000 10:41:51 -0400 To: mc@nuclecu.unam.mx, gnome-announce-list@gnome.org Subject: mc 4.5.51 is out. Syntax is inspired by Java and yacc or lex. The implementation is intentionally kept simple, and no C code parsing is done. Besides that, it's really cool and you should use it and stuff. This release fixes some pretty serious bugs, so upgrading is recommended. They are not lethal, but they result in memory leaks. Also there is some support for GLib/GTK+ 1.3 (What will become GLib/GTK+ 2.0). This will only make the objects compile and work on GTK+ 1.3 (hopefully), but it will not use any 1.3 features. Also there may be still things that won't work, so this support is basically experimental, but GTK+ 2.0 isn't out yet anyway :) What's new in 1.0.3: * Add "const self", and a _CONST cast macro (Bas van der Linden) * Objects should compile with Glib/GTK+ 1.3 (to become 2.0) * Parent handler is properly called for destroy and finalize * Fixes in documentation and examples Where to get it: * http://www.5z.com/jirka/gob.html * ftp://ftp.5z.com/pub/gob/ (tarballs) * ftp://ftp.5z.com/pub/gob/RPM/ (redhat packages) * ftp://ftp.5z.com/pub/gob/DEB/ (debian packages) Debian packages will be available soon! You can either point it directly at an IDL file that it will parse directly, or it can it can get the information from an interface repository. (Not the ORBit IR, yet.) It is also very compact in terms of the amount of code necessary to implement clients and servers. CORBA::ORBit will work out of the box with the Gtk:: Perl module, and an example of this is included. MemProf is a tool for profiling memory usage and finding memory leaks. Its two major features are: - It can generate a profile of which functions in your program have allocated memory, and how much was allocated by each function and by the functions it calls. - It can scan memory and find memory blocks that you've allocated but are no longer referenced anywhere. MemProf works by pre-loading a library to override the C library's memory allocation functions and does not require you to recompile your program. One advantage MemProf has over some other similar tools that are available is that it has a nice GUI frontend and is relatively easy to use. What's new in 0.4.0? The backend in 0.4.0 has been almost totally rewritten to support profiling threaded programs and to follow the children of programs that fork. The front end has also been improved in a number of ways, translations have been added for 12 languages, and numerous bugs have been fixed, by myself and others. Numerous bugs have most likely also been added, so please try it out, find them, and let me know. This release incorporates many new features and bug fixes since the previous version. * Availability: You can get the Evolution 0.2 tarball here: ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/unstable/sources/evolution Evolution also requires a new version of GtkHTML (0.5), Bonobo (0.15), GNOME Print (0.20), OAF (0.5) and ORBit (0.5.2). These packages are available from: ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/unstable/sources ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/stable/sources * Changes in this version: Shell: * Folder selection dialog (Ettore). * Folder creation dialog (Ettore). Addressbook: * LDAP server configuration dialog (Chris Toshok). * Integration of LDAP servers in the shell's tree view (Chris Toshok). * ETable-based view (Chris Lahey). * Printing support for the ETable-based view (Chris Lahey). * Address selection dialog integrated with the message composer (Chris Lahey). * Many miscellaneous bugs fixed (everyone). Calendar: * Printing support (Michael, Federico). * Many, many behavior fixes and polishing to the day/week/month view widgets (Damon). * New glade-based event editor. This is unfinished but usable (Seth, Federico). * Mouse wheel scrolling support (Anders). * We have an awesome new engine for computing recurring events (Damon). This will be plugged in to the new iCalendar code. * Internal and public API fixes (Federico, Seth). * Shell-related changes (Ettore). * Data model for ETable; this is not used yet (Federico). * New iCalendar support; this is not used yet (Federico). * Pilot syncing updates; this is not used yet (Seth). * Many miscellaneous bugs fixed (everyone). Mailer: Major features: * Basic IMAP support (Jeff) * Threaded message view (Michael, Chris Toshok) * Filters now work (original work by Michael, bugfixes by Dan) Smaller features: * Implemented moving messages between folders (Dan) * Very basic printing support (Dan, but it was only like 5 lines of code, because gnome-print kicks ass) * "Delete", "Forward", and "Refile" operations now work on multiple messages. (Chris Lahey, Peter Williams, Dan) * Toggle read/unread flag when the user clicks on the envelope icon (Chris Lahey, Dan). * The "New folder" menu item now works (Ettore, Dan). * The filter/vfolder druid now uses the new shell folder selection UI (Michael) * Added "Cc" to the set of filter/vfolderable headers and make the filter/vfolder "messages to address" rule work with to or cc. (Dan) * New key bindings: "Delete" deletes the current message and jumps to the next undeleted message. "N" and "P" go to next/previous unread message. (Dan) * Keep asking for POP/IMAP password until the user gets it correct or hits Cancel, and remember the result until the user exits (or chooses "Forget Passwords"). (Dan, Jeff) * Kludge Camel to output ISO-8859-1 instead of UTF-8, since neither GtkHTML nor ETable supports UTF-8 still. (Dan) * Use the gnome-vfs "sniff buffer" interface to try to identify the MIME type of attachments without useful type information (Dan) * Allow saving drafts in the composer (Ettore) * Added "Received date" header to the set of possible message list headers. (Dan) * Partial gladification of the config dialog (JP Rosevear) Bug fixes: * Message read/unread/deleted flags should now be saved reliably when you exit, and summary should not be rebuilt when a rebuild isn't needed. Expunging should work reliably (Dan, Ettore, Jeff). * Fix disappearing toolbar bug (Dan). * Fixed a bug that made downloading of very large messages over POP incredibly slow, and various other smaller POP bugs. (Dan) * Fixed bugs that made large attachments sometimes get dropped and small ones sometimes get truncated. (Dan) * Fixed filter/vfolder "messages to address" rule to correctly match "to" rather than "from". (Michael) * Fix some text/plain formatting bugs in the composer. (Dan, Ettore) * Turn off search mode when getting new mail (to avoid corrupting the display). Make "get mail" always put unfiltered mail into Inbox rather than the current folder. (Dan) * Fixed a bug that caused "Re:" to be prepended even to subjects that started with "Re:" when replying. Added a default subject to forwarded messages. (Dan) * Make the "Attach" dialog in the composer remember the last directory it was in. (Dan) * Code to parse invalid date formats since some mailers generate them... (Jeff) * Fixed various small SMTP bugs (Jeff, Chris Lahey) * Fixed some memory leaks (Peter, Jeff) * Make replies use the text/plain part of a multipart/alternative if the user configured plain text rather than HTML mail sending. (Dan) * Various config dialog fixes (Jeff) * Partial filter/vfolder GUI facelift (Jacob) Please note that this is still software in development and should not be used for production work. We appreciate testers and contributors; you'll be in our hearts forever, but please remember that Evolution will still be buggy, incomplete, and temperamental. Thanks to the many people who have sent in suggestions and fixes. The GtkHTML team would also like to thank everyone that has helped make this release possible. The KDE project in particular whose members wrote KHTMLW upon which the GtkHTML code is based (see AUTHORS). gtkhtml-0.5 is available from: ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/unstable/sources/gtkhtml/gtkhtml-0.5.tar.gz This release of GtkHTML is binary and source incompatible with the previous public release of GtkHTML so we increased the library version number for your linking pleasure. GNOME-DB is a complete framewok for developing database-oriented applications, and actually allows access to PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle and ODBC data sources. Apart from this development framework, it also includes several applications and utilities which make it quite suitable for many database-related taks. This new release is another big step towards version 0.1, and includes: * New and improved providers: the MySQL, ODBC and Oracle providers have been rewritten to make full use of the new libgda-server, and they are now stable and growing very quickly. * Provider development framework: we rewrote the already existing providers in a couple of weeks thanks to using the new libgda-server, which means that now, adding new data source providers to the GNOME-DB architecture is quite easy, so we encourage people to do so for their preferred database. * Debian packages: thanks to Akira TAGOH, who helped us in the addition of the framework needed to build Debian packages. Although, only PostgreSQL and MySQL providers are available under this format. But we are working in adding them all for the next release. * Almost-ready-to-use Interbase provider: this is only included in the source distribution, but if somebody wants to try the Interbase part, this will help us in its improvement and bug fixing. * Now in development (soon in your GNOME desktops): - XML queries, as an option to send commands to providers instead of plain (and non-standard) SQL - report engine - Interbase, LDAP and DB2 providers - XML file format to import/export data from/to different database systems - Python bindings for the client libraries - Pascal bindings for the client libraries - Bonobo components to integrate with GNOME Office applications You'll need Bonobo installed in your system to run GNOME-DB. Don't let this prevent you from installing GNOME-DB in your systems, since although this a stable version, it's been released as a development snapshot. As soon as Bonobo becomes part of the GNOME stable releases, GNOME-DB 0.1 will be released, and this will be the first ready-for-all version. And we have Bonobo RPMs (the same version we use ourselves) on our web site, so please don't hesitate and have a try, specially the PostgreSQL part, which is the most complete provider. As soon as we can, Debian packages for the Bonobo component system will be provided or pointed to. You can download the package and find other sources of information in http://www.gnome.org/projects/gnome-db/. Languages written from right-to-left, and complex-text languages are now supported. * The gdk-pixbuf library for image loading and manipulation is has been integrated with GTK+. * The GTK+ object system has mostly been moved to GLib, separating it from the GUI code. Many significant enhancements have been made as part of this. * A new text widget is now included. This started as a port of the Tk text widget, and includes such features of the Tk text widget as tags, marks, and unicode text support. It has been enhanced to support model-view operation and the full power of Pango. * The GDK library has been extensively revised to support multiple windowing systems. The only fully functional backend in 1.3.1 is the X11 backend, however, ports to Win32, Linux-framebuffer, Nano-X, BeOS, and MacOS exist in various states of completion, and at least some of these will be finished and integrated in before the final GTK+-2.0 release. * 32-bit coordinates are now supported throughout GDK and GTK+ (they are emulated where not supported by the windowing system.) * Many minor bug fixes and enhancements. Incompatible changes are documented in docs/Changes-2.0.txt What's new in GLib 1.3.1: * New GObject library added including object system based on the GTK+ object system. * Functions for getting the properties of Unicode characters, computing the canonical decomposition and ordering combining characters aand manipulating UTF-8 string manipulation based on libunicode. * GString now properly handles embedded nuls. * Multiple fixes from the 1.2.x branch. * Upgrade to libtool 1.3.3 * Full thread support (thread creation and destruction). * BeOS port, BeOS dynamic modules. * Many improvements to the Windows ports. * Improvements to the OS/2 port, OS/2 module support. * Double ended queue implementation. * New thread-safe random number generator Mersenne Twister. Availability ============ GLib-1.3.1 and GTK+-1.3.1 are available from: ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/gtk/v1.3/dependencies RPM packages of the unstable versions of GLib, FriBidi, Pango, and GTK+ are available from: ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/gtk/v1.3/binary/RedHat-6.2/ Included are i386 RPMS and SRPMS for Red Hat 6.2. (The SRPMS will most likely work on similar systems, the RPMS may work on similar systems.) Dependencies ============ Several new libraries are now required to build GTK+. Suitable versions of these packages can be found at: ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/gtk/v1.3/dependencies or from their original locations. - The Pango text layout and rendering library: http://www.pango.org/download.shtml Pango, in turn, requires the FriBidi library, available from: http://imagic.weizmann.ac.il/~dov/freesw/FriBidi/ Note that in order to use fribidi-0.12 with GLib-1.3.1, you'll need to apply the patch: ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/gtk/v1.3/dependencies/fribidi-0.1.12-glib2.patch - The libtiff, libgiff, and libjpeg image libraries. You most likely have these installed on your system already. If not these libraries are available from: http://www.libtiff.org/ ftp://swrinde.nde.swri.edu/pub/png/src/ ftp://ftp.uu.net/graphics/jpeg/ If these libraries are not available, the corresponding image loaders will simply not be built. However, this may cause applications using GTK+ not to function properly. Trying it Out ============= If you install the unstable GTK+ from RPMS, the testgtk program (a widget tour) and testtext program (a simple text editor using the new text widget) will be installed in /usr/bin. If you compile from source, these programs can be found in the gtk/ subdirectory. (Other demos are found in the demos/ subdirectory.) Reporting Problems ================== Bug reports should be submitted by mail to the GNOME bug tracker at http://bugs.gnome.org. Instructions for reporting bugs by mail can be found in the README file for GTK+. Patches and other assorted comments should go to gtk-devel-list@gnome.org. It includes KDE and GNOME APIs to manage Python interpreters, scripts and the communications between running scripts and your application. Users benefit from a common scripting language allowing them to develop scripting skills that are re-usable with all their applications. The same Visual Python script uses KDE widgets when run from a KDE application, and GNOME widgets when run from a GNOME application. When used in conjunction with tools like SWIG and SIP to expose application specific functionality to scripts, developers can provide their users with the ability to extend their application in many ways. It is not just a front-end which forks and execs "find", nor is it a utility that reinvents the wheel by rewriting the "find" utility itself. Instead, the original source code to the GNU "find" utility (findutils-4.1) was used, and a GUI component integrated into it. v1.0.1 fixes an embarrassing build problem in v1.0 such that the binary in the RPM file did not work. Building and installing from source was unaffected though. v1.0 was never announced. It only contained a few fixes since v0.6: - The number of files found was reported as zero, regardless if there really were files found or not. - Portability fixes. - Updated Spanish translation. - The RPM file did not contain the locale files (translations). Anyway here it goes the release 0.4.5 of GTM. For those of you who don't know gtm (GNOME Transfer Manager), gtm is capable of downloading files from the network using FTP and HTTP protocols. The program is also capable of continuing the downloads and accepts drag and drop of URL from netscape. You can dnd to the program or to the applet (applet dnd is very usefull if you have a small monitor). You can even dnd from gmc and gftp (need at least gftp version 2.0.5a). This means more than one URL at a time. And now there is galeon (http://galeon.sourceforge.net/) which uses GTM to do the transfers. It's the first client I saw (beside the gtm_applet in gtm distribution) to communicate with GTM throught CORBA. If you want to know more visit gtm page http://gtm.sourceforge.net/ You can download the source code, RPM (RedHat 6.x) or SRPM. http://download.sourceforge.net/gtm/gtm-0.4.5.tar.gz http://download.sourceforge.net/gtm/gtm-0.4.5-1.i386.rpm http://download.sourceforge.net/gtm/gtm-0.4.5-1.src.rpm Changes since version last version (0.4.4): * New dialog box with list statistics thanks to Ross Arnold * The application doesn't crash while starting up because the CORBA bug was causing this * Fixed a CORBA bug making the applet crash when a URL was dropped or added from the dialog box. Or crash with option -g * List order is now saved thanks thanks to Ross Arnold for the fix * Better networking detection and also works on NetBSD. Thanks to Ian Campbell and Mario Kemper (the last one made it work on NetBSD) * The gtm_applet saves a default properties to be used when it doesn't have session properties to use. * Now it is possible to disable the selection of the download dir on the applet dialog boxes. Using this the gtm regexp or the default are used instead. * Fixed the problem making the total size reducing everytime a download was continued (The stats went crazy because of this). * Now it's possible to change the button click event of the applet (thanks to Ross Arnold (). * Ross Arnold () added regular expressions based on the download URL to select the download dir. * Applet correctly transparent now (thanks to Ross Arnold ). * Changed the confirm remove to confirm remove for incomplete files and confirm remove complete files (thanks to Ross Arnold ). * The proxy options can be set even if the global proxy is not used. This is needed because the user might activate the proxy later and wants to be sure the proxy options are correct. * From the toolbar you can toggle the disable auto download option for selected files. * From the download info page it is possible to enable/disable auto download or proxy usage. * Nailed the bug making the progress stop working for files dropped on the applet. * With the new translation setup Kenneth Christiansen () help me to put up GTM will be translated before a new release It's all for now. -- Bruno Pires Marinho http://mega.ist.utl.pt/~bapm/ From hp@redhat.com Fri Jul 21 18:55:46 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: gnome-announce-list@gnome.org Received: from icon.labs.redhat.com (icon.labs.redhat.com [207.175.42.144]) by mail.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0130B2BACE; Fri, 21 Jul 2000 18:55:45 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from hp@localhost) by icon.labs.redhat.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) id SAA22889; Fri, 21 Jul 2000 18:50:23 -0400 X-Authentication-Warning: icon.labs.redhat.com: hp set sender to hp@redhat.com using -f To: gnome-announce-list@gnome.org, gnome-list@gnome.org Subject: GNOME Summary May 30 - July 21 From: Havoc Pennington Date: 21 Jul 2000 18:50:22 -0400 Message-ID: Lines: 294 User-Agent: Gnus/5.0803 (Gnus v5.8.3) Emacs/20.5 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: gnome-announce-list-admin@gnome.org Errors-To: gnome-announce-list-admin@gnome.org X-BeenThere: gnome-announce-list@gnome.org X-Loop: gnome-announce-list@gnome.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.0beta2 Precedence: bulk List-Id: Announcements only This is the GNOME Summary for May 30 - July 21, 2000. ============================================================= Table of Contents ------------------------------------------------------------- 1) StarOffice to join GNOME 2) Join the initial GNOME Foundation membership 3) GTK+ Preview Release 4) Development tutorials and information 5) Evolution preview release 6) pkg-config 7) Inti preview release 8) WM Spec versions 9) Web browsers 10) Hacking Activity 11) New and Updated Software You're probably wondering where the summary has been; basically I got busy, stressed, etc. and just wasn't feeling up to it. However I'll try to do them regularly again going forward (though it may not be once per week; I'm considering one per 10 days or 2 weeks or so). In any case, there's a lot of stuff that's happened recently, I'll try to just hit some highlights. ============================================================== 1) StarOffice to join GNOME -------------------------------------------------------------- The exciting announcement of the month is that Sun will be joining the GNOME community with their newly-GPLed StarOffice project. Most of the details remain to be seen; for example, we don't know how this will impact the various components of GNOME Office. Certainly we'll try to minimize duplicated effort when possible. Hopefully everyone will welcome the Sun engineers as they join the project. You can read more here: http://news.gnome.org/gnome-news/964019206/index_html ============================================================== 2) Join the initial GNOME Foundation membership -------------------------------------------------------------- In order to create a GNOME Foundation, we need an initial list of voting members. To be a member of the foundation, you only need to consider yourself an active member of the GNOME community; if you contribute translations, documentation, code, art, advice, or whatever, and you keep up with GNOME happenings, we'd like you to join the foundation. To this end the steering committee decided to create a CVS module "gnome-foundation", containing the file "membership.txt". This is the canonical list of members of the GNOME Foundation. Anyone with CVS access should feel free to add themselves to this file; please include your full name, your email address, and a short blurb about your role in GNOME: Dan Mueth (GDP leader) Bart Decrem (Eazel, helping organize the foundation) Jim Gettys (original X author, spiritual advisor) etc. If you use munging to avoid spam please use "no_spam", so everyone has the same anti-spam and we can easily remove it via perl script. If you don't have CVS access, send mail to the ad hoc membership committee (Dan Mueth and Maciej Stachowiak) including your name, email address, and involvement with GNOME. They'll add you to the CVS module. You can reach Dan and Maciej at membership@gnome.org. The initial membership of the foundation will be responsible for electing the first board of directors for the foundation; we hope to have a vote in the coming weeks. ============================================================== 3) GTK+ Preview Release -------------------------------------------------------------- It's been decided that the next version of GTK+ will be called GTK+ 2.0 (not 1.4, which was the previously-planned version). The unstable prerelease series will be 1.3.x, and the first in that series is now available. Owen's announcement includes details on the features of GTK+ 2.0: http://mail.gnome.org/pipermail/gtk-list/2000-July/022410.html http://news.gnome.org/gnome-news/963685850/index_html The final release is expected in a timeframe on the order of "2-3 months". The feature list is more or less already frozen, though all the features aren't in place yet. Now is also a good time to bring up small changes or enhancements on gtk-devel-list@gnome.org. ============================================================== 4) Development tutorials and information -------------------------------------------------------------- Glade/Python: http://linuxfocus.org/English/July2000/article160.shtml Intro to GNOME programming: http://www.linuxprogramming.com/news/news_story.php3?ltsn=2000-07-12-001-03-ID-UU-UU ============================================================== 5) Evolution preview release -------------------------------------------------------------- Another Evolution preview, see here: http://news.gnome.org/gnome-news/963451511/index_html This one is almost usable, Jonathan is using it daily to read to his mail. He's not using it to _send_ mail, because it segfaults, but... you can't have everything. ;-) ============================================================== 6) pkg-config -------------------------------------------------------------- We're hoping to move most of the libraries we use to a new "pkg-config" system in the near future. This is similar to gnome-config, but will come as a separate package so we can use it with glib/GTK+ without creating a circular dependency. Also, it has some features gnome-config lacks. You can find the pkg-config source code here: http://pkgconfig.sourceforge.net/ The CVS version has a rewrite of the shell script in C, which makes configure run a lot faster, and makes it easier to add features and maintain the program. ============================================================== 7) Inti preview release -------------------------------------------------------------- I released a preview of the Inti C++ framework, you can find it on the Inti web site: http://sources.redhat.com/inti/ ============================================================== 8) WM Spec versions -------------------------------------------------------------- There are new versions of the Window Manager Specification here: http://www.freedesktop.org ============================================================== 9) Web browsers -------------------------------------------------------------- People are into writing small web browsers. Syntax is inspired by Java and yacc or lex. The implementation is intentionally kept simple, and no C code parsing is done. Besides that, it's really cool and you should use it and stuff. You should really consider upgrading to 1.0.4 as a serious bug was found in the finalize routine. Basically if you used any private members you could get a segfault. Some changes were done to the CORBA interfaces and to the internal APIs, you might need to do some work to get your Bonobo application to work with this new release. * Availability ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/unstable/bonobo Enjoy, Miguel. Hi,

Well, that was a bit unpolished. This one should solve certain
problems you may have had installing the first one:

  ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/unstable/sources/GConf/GConf-0.7.tar.gz

A couple people suggested describing GConf in the announce. GConf is a
configuration database library, you can use it to store settings that
the user selects in your app's preferences dialog. (Or settings that
get set in some other way, if your app has no GUI.)

Read about GConf here:
