I've got:
automake 1.4-6
autoconf 2.14.1-6
libtool 1.3.3-1

But it should work with older versions (I think).

Maybe it is an error on the autoconf/automake stuff in gnome-db, but I've never
had this error. Try to run autogen.sh instead of configure (it accepts the same
command-line options) so that all autoconf/automake files are generated for
your system.
