In your time configuring an internet connection under the GNOME Desktop, you will undoubtedly run across DHCP, the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.

DHCP is a standard protocol that provides for automatic assignment of IP addresses, facilitating setup of a network.  Without a DHCP-enabled server (such as a router), IP addresses must be assigned manually.
