You will still have that problem with non GNOME apps, just for the
record.

There is an applet that does that. Not in the main distro, but search
in http://freshmeat.net/ or any other searcher. And I have heard task
bar has changed in v 1.4 beta.

In GNOME 1.2: Control-Center / Session / Startup Programs. Then click
Browser Currently Running Programs, select gmc and change style to
Normal, then Remove (or kill it). After this Save Session so changes
become permanent. Is that what you want?
