if you have a different backgroudn per desktop no wonder its eating up
mem as you switch (it realizes images and pixmaps as needed for
desktops) - try using he same image / pixamp etc. for all desktops. (E
will eventually throw out the backgorund images if you dont visit a
desktop for a while)
