Panel: Apps disapearing?

I installed gnome for one of my professors today, and it was all
working perfectly til someone cut the power to the computerr.  Now we
cant get any of the apps that we DnD onto the panel to stay there, they
just simplly disapear once we restart gnome.  Im doing a clean logout
and login, but they just arent there, strangly enough if I add a applet
or a drawer those remain... any ideas?
