Well, my personal solution is a couple of lines in my .xinitrc

cd ~/
rm -rf ~/.gnome_backup
cp -R ~/.gnome ~/.gnome_backup

Every time gnome starts, the backup is created. If Gnome screws up, I
just replace .gnome with the backup, *before* starting gnome again
(the backup would be overwritten).

It a heavy-handed cludge, but I use CVS gnome, and _my_own_ test code
generally causes most of my problems!

PS That .sig sure is familiar :)
You could have at least shrunk it down to fit your smaller email
address:) Proportion is important I think...
