Ur problem is really easy to solve i discribe it for balsa.
change into the balsa src dir, do a cd idl, then do orbit-idl *.idl, and
then do cd .. and finally do a make and all goes fine. i havenīt tested
gnome-chess (chess sucks :) but it should be similar
