Now GNOME won't start up even *with* E!

I installed E so that gnome-session would start (since this
WM-independent desktop seemed to insist on having that particular WM
to start with) only to find that GNOME wouldn't start even *with* E.
After typing 'startx' the usual grey X screen lingers for a bit and
then X quits with the following error message:

SESSION_MANAGER=local/jjlinux.jwramsey:/tmp/.ICE-unix/4092,tcp/jjlinux.jwramsey:10785

Priority 00:  Starting     Id = default0
Priority 00:  Cloning      Id = default0
Priority 00: Registering Id = (null)

The numbers in that gobbledygook about SESSION_MANAGER and .ICE-unix
change a bit but the rest is consistent every time I start X. The
contents of my .Xclients file as I do this are

exec gnome-session

Further, I get these funny named files in my .gnome directory, like
.xsm04158baa, every time I try to start up X with GNOME. Here's the
contents of this file:

remove protoname=ICE protodata="" netid=tcp/jjlinux.jwramsey:10791
authname=MIT-
MAGIC-COOKIE-1
remove protoname=XSMP protodata="" netid=tcp/jjlinux.jwramsey:10791
authname=MIT
-MAGIC-COOKIE-1
remove protoname=ICE protodata=""
netid=local/jjlinux.jwramsey:/tmp/.ICE-unix/41
58 authname=MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1
remove protoname=XSMP protodata=""
netid=local/jjlinux.jwramsey:/tmp/.ICE-unix/4
158 authname=MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1

If someone could tell me what's wrong, I'd love to know.
