How to get gnome-linuxconf working?

Hi,

I have no luck to get gnome-linuxconf from CVS to do ANYTHING (other
starting up, printing "Prefer treemenu" and stopping.... no GUI or
other stuff is happening. this is with the stock RH 5.2 linuxconf and
with the new linuxconf-1.14r1-1

strace yields the following:

[hope I didn't delete too much here...]
select(5, [4], NULL, NULL, NULL) = 1 (in [4])
read(4, "\1\355<\0\341\2\0\0\0\0\1\0\2\0\377"..., 32) = 32
read(4, "\3\0\0\0\10Bh\10 \0\377\0 \0\35\0"..., 28) = 28
read(4, "\236\0\0\0\324\0\0\0@\0\0\0\325\0"..., 232) = 232
read(4, "\0\0\1\0\4\0\1\0\0\0\0\0\1\0\2\0"..., 2688) = 2688
write(5, "\1\10\1\0\0\0\0\0", 8) = 8
gettimeofday({921694105, 37850}, NULL) = 0
ioctl(4, FIONREAD, [0]) = 0
SYS_168(0x805c7c0, 0x4, 0xffffffff, 0x40418484, 0) = 1
read(5, "\1\22\0\1\0\0\0\0", 8) = 8
gettimeofday({921694105, 136492}, NULL) = 0
ioctl(4, FIONREAD, [0]) = 0
SYS_168(0x805c7c0, 0x4, 0xffffffff, 0x40418484, 0) = -1 EINTR (Interrupted system call)
--- SIGWINCH (Window changed) ---
gettimeofday({921694112, 792908}, NULL) = 0
ioctl(4, FIONREAD, [0]) = 0
SYS_168(0x805c7c0, 0x4, 0xffffffff, 0x40418484, 0x4

and then it blocks....
