Gnome keeps hanging, why?

Ok, here's the problem:
I am able to start Gnome with both gnome-session and by putting 'panel
&' in my .Xclients file. Yet Gnome often hangs, making X unusable. When
I say often, I mean about 1 minute into my session, then it hangs
(unless i don't click on any of MC's icons or use the panel, and even
then it still has problems hanging.) When this happens, I can't use
enlightenment's destop menu, nor can I use the panel at all, so I can't
start any apps, including an xterm. I can continue working in the window
that last had the focus (if I had any open), but I can't switch windows
or close anything. If i don't use gnome-session to start Gnome, I can
switch to another vc and kill both MC and the panel, then switch back to
X. After about 15 seconds I am able to again use E's desktop menus to
restart the panel or do whatever else I need to do. If I am using
gnome-session and I kill either the panel or MC, the session manager
restarts them (which is good, because that's what it is supposed to do).
In fact, when MC is killed, it is started and a new window drawn. I
still cannot use anything though.
I'm still sort of a newbie (only 2 years off and on of Linux/X
experience, with more off than on), so I can't tell exactly what's
causing this. Sometimes this happens when I run E by itself, but not
very often, so it seems that Gnome is making it worse.
My ideas so far: E is misbehaving or Gnome is not quite working right.
(brilliant, aren't they :-)

Distro: RedHat 5.2 on Intel platform
X server: XFree86 3.3.3 using SVGA server
Gnome version: 1.0, compiled from tarball
E version: 0.15.4, compiled from tarball.
