Here is what happened to me. YMMV. I downloaded and compiled the latest
xscreensaver for my SuSE 6 system but gnome could not find it. So I got
no hacks at all but random or none. I then downloaded the earlier
xscreensaver rpm file at the 3.07 level and rpm'ed it in. The rpm packages
for gnome were happy I guess because I got hacks back. I commented out my
xscreensaver starting in .xinitrc and moved my .xscreensaver out to another
name so I could use gnome's screensaver function. If I did not do this, the
screensaver rotates to all the hacks I had installed in the .xscreensaver no
matter which ones I selected in gnome.
I have not noticed any unusual problems here installing the later tarball
and then rpm'ing the earlier xscreensaver in to satisfy the rpm dep.
