Can anyone get sound to work on a Sparc?

This is on gnome-libs-1.0.58/gnome-core-1.1.9/Solaris 2.6

esdplay /usr/local/share/sounds/login.wav WORKS
Sound Monitor applet WORKS

But I hear no sounds in GNOME :-(
Playing as sample from Sound Manager or Control Panel sometimes
produces a "click", and that's about it.

How can I find out what's wrong? It's hard to file a bug report if I
don't know which package is at fault...
