Here it is:

crw--------	1 507	mail	14,	3 Apr 17 199 /dev/dsp

That may be the problem- I have no user with a UID though I do have a 
group mail

I'll look on my Red Hat box on work on monday (really nice- Sun 
Ultra1, though I'm not too fond of Red Hat...) and figure out a 
proper user/group scheme for gnome on my  LFS system at home.

I know how this happened. I built my home system all from source, but 
it would have been very tedious to remake every fricken node for 
every device, so I copied the entire /dev directory from the previous 
system.

Thanks! I think fixing that will get it all worked out.
