does the "backspace" key work in gnome via netscape, editors, etc?

I would like to know if october gnome supports the backspace key during text 
editing. mine does not work. I have to instead press the arrow keys to go 
the part of the text I want to edit then pressing backspace to delete the 
part or I have to highlight the part of the text I want edited instead of 
just being able to press "backspace" and go directly to the text I want 
edited. does gnome support "backspacing?" or not?
