This is a guess and might be complete rubbish.

Have you recently attempted to upgrade GNOME?

"Unix98 ptys" refers to a specific option which it wants turned on
in the kernel compilation process (well, in the process of selecting
what you want with 'make menuconfig' or 'make xconfig'). Red Hat 5.2
didn't use it.

The rest of the message is probably the important bit. There was a
_big_ change in the libraries between Red Hat 5.2 and Red Hat 6.0,
as well as in the kernel. RH 5.2 came with glibc 2.0 and linux 2.0.36
or so. RH 6.0 came with glibc 2.1 and linux 2.2.(um, something..).
(RH 5.2 came with about version 0.30 of Gnome, too. Eep.)

You have to install rpms which have been built for the right combination.
If you try to install rpms built for RH 6.0, then they won't work on
RH 5.2 because of this library and kernel business. You could use
rpm --rebuild on the .src.rpms, I expect, (I have no idea, to be honest:
I never tried) or you could look for rpms built for RH 5.2. Or you could
upgrade the lot, kernel, glibc and all: I did this with the RH 6.0 CD and
it all went fine, but I didn't have much to lose and I gather that people
still running 5.2 do so because it's very very stable and they don't want
to change things. So you may not want to do that.

Perhaps someone else has better suggestions :)
