HOME/END keys, probably a FAQ

Debian 2.2 "potato," i386. gnome-terminal-1.2.4. XFree86 3.3.6.

How can I make the Home/End keys work in the shell and in curses
applications, etc.? Also Backspace does not work correctly in 'less'
although it does work in the shell.

I have read tons of man pages for tput, bash, stty, setterm, xrdb, etc.
and no matter what I do I can't get this working.

Fyi, here is what I get from ^V+Home and ^V+End, respectively:

^[OH
^[OF

Backspace gives me a "^H" which appears normal.

xterm and aterm do not suffer from this. Anyone know how to deal with
it?

Thanks.
