Thanks Sean... that makes sense.  RH7 does install Gnome by default and
who knows if KDE is even installed along with it.  I might have to pull
that from the installation CDs if not.

I wonder, what would you do if you didn't have the session menu at the
long prompt?  Without the login panel (just the traditional text-based
login).
