'Traditional' Unix ways (there a several of them) of booting/shutting down
are ugly as hell.

After I got familiar enough with Linux I grabbed Richard Gooch's
revised bootscript system, tailored it a bit for me
and got much happier.

Consider at least reading about it on the net.
Needed replacements for init etc are in util-linux package.

However, it is not for newbies.
