xml problem

I'm trying to compile Gnome from scratch but a few programs like bonobo
are choking on libxml. The library is installed but bonobo's configure
script insists that it does not exist. If I run gnome-config
--modversion xml, it also insists that libxml does not exist. I ran
ldconfig manually, but nothing changed. Is there some step that I am
missing?
