gnome-libs-1.4.1.1 compile problems

I am getting the following error while trying to compile
gnome-libs-1.4.1.1  I have never used libtool before and do not
understand what it does.

/bin/sh ../libtool --mode=compile /usr/local/bin/gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I.
-I. -I.. -D_GNU_SOURCE
-I/workspace/hw/dpeart/gnome/install/include/gtk-1.2
-I/workspace/hw/dpeart/gnome/install/include/glib-1.2
-I/workspace/hw/dpeart/gnome/install/lib/glib/include
-I/usr/openwin/include  -g -O2 -Wall -Wunused  -c findme.c
../libtool: test: argument expected
make[2]: *** [findme.lo] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory
`/workspace/hw/dpeart/gnome/gnome-libs-1.4.1.1/support

It seems that the call to libtool is being done incorrectly.  Any ideas
on how to fix this?
