How to do simple desktop configs?

Just installed the newest Ximian desktop, and have a few questions:

1. How do you change the names of the icons appearing on the desktop?  If
   you do a right-click on any icon 'rename' filed in the menu is not
   active.

2. How do you add new icons to the desktop?
