A small mouse problem.

I just upgraded from 8.1 to 8.2 kernel 2.4.18-6. I am using gnome
1.4.0.6.  Every time I login my mouse reverts to right handed
orientation.  I must go to settings | mouse to "reapply" left handed
settings. I say reapply because when the mouse settings window appears,
it shows left hand selected.  I click on the apply button and wahla! I
am returned to left handed orientation.  I can only assume that
something is not being saved at the end of my session. How might I go
about troubling shooting this?
