If the GNOME on Solaris is set up in the same way as on Linux, then the default setting will not allow you to shut down your machine while in a session.
You log out of GNOME and then when you are presented with the login dialogue again, you can select to shutdown, reboot or login.
(This is if it is the same as on Linux)
