How to get True Type Fonts working?

Can anyone point me to the relevant documentation on installing/using
True Type fonts with Gnome 2.2? I have a fresh RedHat 9 installation,
upgraded from RH-7.1, and I realize there are major differences in font
handling between these two releases. I have rummaged through my saved
gnome-list archives for references to "font", and found a few things,
but my understanding is (obviously) still incomplete.

What I have done so far:
Edited /etc/X11/fs/config to include a pointer to my ttfonts.

Ran ttmkfdir in my ttfonts directory. It complained about a few fonts
not having OS/2 something-or-others, which I ignored, as I have nothing
to do with OS/2. This morning when I booted, the startup messages
showed that xfs was looking at the right directories.

Do I need to add links to each of my true type fonts in my ~/.fonts
directory? What else?

Any advice welcomed.
