There is no 1.8.3 verson for win32 that I know. You should test the most
recent development version:
http://www.gnome.org/~jody/gnumeric/win32/gnumeric-1.9.3-20080908.exe
(print preview does not work, but printing to a real printer should).

I am a novice at Gnumeric so I need help.

I have an array in a Gnumeric sheet, let's call it B1:K50.

I want to do numeric operations on *all* the elements in this array.

Firstly, I highlight the array. (But one cell seems to still be more =
'active' than the others,
it is white while the others are blue. It is usually B1. Why is that? I =
want my formula applied=20
to *all* the cells. How do I ensure this?).

One kind of operation I want to do is like this:
=3Dproduct((a-B1:K50)*(b-B1:K50))
where a,b are constants and are integers as are the elements in B1:K50.

Then I type Ctrl-Shift-Enter (as stated in the manual).

All that happens is that I get text in another cell like A52 (or just =
anywhere, usually in A) which
says things like #VALUE? or #NAME?

But I nothing happens to the elements in my array.

Can anyone advise me what to do?

The destination cells should not be the same as the cells containing
your original data, or you'll end with cyclic dependencies which might
not give anything significant.

I don't undestand your formula. Anyway, the product function does not
accept that kind or argument. You might use =product(B1:K50) to get the
product of all the values in the range.
To use something as =(a-B1:K50)*(b-B1:K50), first select an empty range
of the appropriate size (50 rows * 10 columns), then type the formula,
and then type Ctrl-Shift-Enter. The first cell will containthe result of
(a-B1)*(b-B1), the cell just below will have the result of (a-B2)*(b-B2)
and so on.

You might want to read a spreadsheet tutorial, there are many available
on the web, and most current spreadsheets have the same behavior.

Well, it does. On the otehr hand it calculates the product of a large
number of terms each being the product of 2 differences. I doubt you
really mean that.

Hi,

I am finding I cannot move from cell to cell using the TAB key. I also have
to double click on the cell to edit it rather than simply typing
immediately. This is also true of the delete key.

Has anyone any ideas as to the preferences which allow you to change over to
regular spreadsheet keystrokes? It was working as of Friday so I'm preplexed
as to what has changed - I'm pretty certain it's a preference thing.

Those types of things sometimes happen to me after I've gone too far
into swap. In simple terms, a reboot should clean up memory and get
things working the way they're supposed to.

If that is not the solution, then I have no idea.

This is really not that simple.

Suppose you want to turn A1:C500 into uppercase:

select D1:F500 from the top left down.
enter the following in the op left cell (keeping th ewhoel region
selected):
=upper(A1:C500)
when you type enter to enter this is in the cell make sure to hold down
the ctrl and shift keys.

D1:F500 should now contain the uppercase version and be selected.

copy

select A1:C500 and paste special "as values"

then you still need to clear D1:F500.

...

it would be nice if there were an easier way.

Today I tried to open an old gnumeric file (quite old, from 2000) 
using gnumeric 1.8.3.  The result was not pretty, terminating in a 
crash:

I would take a guess that if you used the "old slow importer" then
things would work.  (In the open dialog, press "Advanced" and
selected the old gnumeric xml importer.)

Hello,

I found that a simple csv file containing floating-point values is not 
correctly parsed by gnumeric.

example csv data file:
Xsrc,Ysrc
-1.65956,9.9437
16.4,-10.43
1.234,6.943

data B2 is parsed as 9/9437 instead of 9.9437

Can i force gnumeric to parse data as floating-point value ?
Is this a bug or missing feature of the csv parsing routines ?
Am i doing something wrong ?

I'm supposing you are running gnumeric in fr locale. If it is the case,
you should use the "Advanced" button in the open file dialog, choose
"text import (configurable) as file type (french: "Importation de texte
(paramétrable)"), and go to the last page of the guru where you can
choose the locale for the file ("C" locale is appropriate for your
sample)
