To follow up on my own post, I tried exporting CC=gcc,
doing a "make clean",
re-running configure, make.
Now I get:

Making all in gobject

I'm confused, I think the library it wants is in:

../glib/.libs, but I don't see how the "libglib = ../glib/libglib-2.0.la"
part is supposed to work.
