Using the tip_private member of GtkTooltips

Is there a supported, non-deprecated way to use the tip_private member
of GtkTooltipsData?  The docs say "(FIXME: how to actually "switch on"
private tips?)" which doesn't give a lot away.  I Googled and found
GtkTipsQuery , but that's deprecated.  Do I have to do it all myself
with gtk_tooltips_data_get ?
