I have got a problem when compiling ORBit2 2.12.2 which is very similar to the one @ http://mail.gnome.org/archives/orbit-list/2004-November/msg00013.html. The error is:

../../../src/idl-compiler/orbit-idl-2 -I../../../src/idl/CORBA_PIDL -I../../../src/idl/CORBA -I../../../src/idl/interop -I../../../src/orb/orb-core --noskels --nodefskels --nostubs --noidata --nocommon --showcpperrors --define=Object=OObject --define=TypeCode=TTypeCode --deps ./.deps/corba-defs.idl.P ../../../src/orb/orb-core/corba-defs.idl

mode, show preprocessor errors, passes: headers

Error: Empty file

** (process:13079): WARNING **: ../../../src/orb/orb-core/corba-defs.idl compilation failed

I'm working inside scratchbox with an arm-linux compiler made by sb-toolchains. I have successfully built the gtk+2.6.10 and gtkmm2.6.5 using this compiler. The orbit-idl-2 can print out usage message. But it seems it reports every .idl file empty while it is not.

Any help is appreciated!

Best regards!

Liubo

LSB developing a set of standards primarily for ISVs, so a software application can run on any compliant system. ORBit2 is on the list of libraries that are requested by ISVs, and appears to be used by a lot of packages we checked during a quick scan we made internally. I'm going back through the ChangeLog, and I'm trying to find the answer to several questions that will help decide how to prioritize libraries to be included. Would you consider ORBit2 to be best known practice? (Did I miss ORBit3 or some other successor to the library I'm currently researching, or is there something else?) How long is binary compatibility maintained? It looks like the API hasn't changed (aside from adding new interfaces) for a while, but it's taking me a while to go through all the comments in the ChangeLog. Is there a test suite that exercises the API or functionality (both would be best)? Is there a list of programs I could use to demonstrate ORBit2 functionality? Or maybe a list that shows what depends on ORBit2? Thanks for any help, and please pardon my lack of familiarity with ORBit2. I have only started using ORBit2 a few months ago, so please take my answers below with a grain of salt. I'm sure the long-time users and developers of ORBit2 will have more profound answers. > Would you consider ORBit2 to be best known practice? (Did I miss ORBit3 > or some other successor to the library I'm currently researching, or is > there something else?) I think ORBit2 is indeed best known practice. Its LGPL license is compatible with Open Source and commercial applications and technically it is easier to integrate because of its C language binding and implementation. It is used as one of the foundations of the GNOME desktop which implies that unless something completely unexpected happens, it should be around for a while. > How long is binary compatibility maintained? It looks like the API > hasn't changed (aside from adding new interfaces) for a while, but it's > taking me a while to go through all the comments in the ChangeLog. It seems to be pretty stable to me. I haven't seen much discussions about ongoing development on this list either, so it is probably mature at this time. > Is there a test suite that exercises the API or functionality (both > would be best)? Yes, there are test programs which to me look pretty comprehensive. They are in the "test" sub directory. > Is there a list of programs I could use to demonstrate ORBit2 > functionality? The echo-client/server programs in the test directory might be good starting point. > Or maybe a list that shows what depends on ORBit2? rpm -q --whatrequires libORBit-2.so.0 -i will give you a list. I have a helper function to release memory within string sequences. It goes like this: void brutus_free_seq_string_content(BRUTUS_seq_string *strings) { int n; if (!strings) return; for (n = 0; n < strings->_length; n++) CORBA_free(strings->_buffer[n]); CORBA_free(strings->_buffer); strings->_maximum = 0; strings->_length = 0; strings->_buffer = NULL; } BRUTUS_seq_string is a typedef in the BRUTUS namespace: typedef sequence seq_string; Memory has been allocated to a string sequence like this: name_fields._maximum = 2; name_fields._length = name_fields._maximum; name_fields._buffer = BRUTUS_seq_string_allocbuf(name_fields._maximum); name_fields._buffer[0] = CORBA_string_dup("Reply-To"); name_fields._buffer[1] = CORBA_string_dup("Content-MD5"); The "name_fields" variable is subsequently used as an "in" parameter to a CORBA method. The problem is that I get a double free exception from glibc when I invoke brutus_free_seq_string_content() on &name_fields after it has been used. The error comes from this line: CORBA_free(strings->_buffer); Why on earth is this happening? Does the CORBA method free the _buffer or what?
