Re: [orca-list] Orca's naming of characters, how to correct them

You mentioned maths symbols, these would be good. In fact if there's
interest I would like to see more than just the symbols for maths, how
about mathml in firefox? I know that firevox can speak some mathml, is
it possible for orca, or is this different as firevox is a plugin and
works more internally where as orca is external to firefox. On this
note, if yes to the previous, could better accessibility (eg. mathml) be
gained by using a combination of orca as it is communicating with an
orca firefox plugin?

Yes while character tables can be modified in source it might be a bit
much having to add back in the user defined characters (or renamings)
everytime orca is updated (I assume that is what would need to be done
as is), these should be possible to be kept between upgrades like the
speed and pitch, etc settings. This also allows for different users to
have different settings for characters (I think for _ line is
sufficient, but I know that it is regularly referred to as underline or
underscore, so if a different user of the computer disagreed with me
they can have a different name for it).

Hi Michael, all.

Its been one thing that has bugged me from the beginning of using orca,

Funny you should mention this. As we "speak," I'm changing chnames.py
to add new symbols, among other things. One of the symbols I added was
the (British) pound sign. And I was thinking that the hash/number
symbol should be called number instead. Is there anyone opposed to
that? I saw  and debated whether or not to add it. I had decided
against it, but you've changed my mind. <smile> My handy unicode table
tells me it's the "not sign." If it were pronounced "not" would that be
cool?

Mostly what I want to add are mathematical symbols from the U+2200
table. I'm also adding bullets. But I take requests: Shout out your
favorite missing symbols on the list, along with their ideal (English)
name and I'll get them added.

Michael, I also agree that we should have a user configurable way to
name/rename symbols. It's not practical for us to include every
possible symbol -- and we might not name the ones we do include the way
you might like. <smile> I just entered an RFE (request for
enhancement) in bugzilla:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=431531

Thanks and take care.
