[orca-list] Getting Orca to work alongside other sound

Hello,

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04.  I noted in the orca FAQ that orca may work
alongside other audio out of the box with ubuntu 8.04, but in my case
it doesn't.  I tried the procedure mentioned in the FAQ, involving editing the
GNOME_Speech_SynthesisDriver_Viavoice.server file (I'm using viavoice)
but that killed orca, even though I do have alsa-oss installed, and
got the permissions right.  

I'd appreciate any ideas as to where to go from here.
