When I select "User Guide" in the Help menu I get an error message saying:- There was an error launching the default action command associated with this location. I assume this is because the help files are not on the system where I am actually seeing the planner GUI, they are on the remote server. This raises two questions:- Where are the help files? It's not obvious and neither the error message nor the console logging from planner tell me where they are. If I know where they are (and I'm assuming they're HTML) I can just view them in my browser as needed, this is OK as a workaround. Shouldn't X applications (which planner is) not handle being run on an X server as I am doing without problems? OK, not many people do this nowadays but it is rather fundamental to the way X works surely. Just to make quite clear how I'm running planner:- planner is installed on a Ubuntu Server 9.10 system called 'server' I am logged in on my desktop Xubuntu 9.10 system called 'chris' I 'ssh -X server' from chris and enter 'planner' on the command line. planner runs on 'server' as an X client process to the X server which is 'chris' and I see the planner GUI on my screen. This is absolutely standard X, how it was designed to work. -- Chris Green From griffon26@kfk4ever.com Sun Jan 10 21:00:26 2010 Return-Path: X-Original-To: planner-list@gnome.org Delivered-To: planner-list@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F3E56750085 for ; Sun, 10 Jan 2010 21:00:25 +0000 (GMT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -2.599 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.599 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_00=-2.599] autolearn=ham Received: from menubar.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (menubar.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id vpAbtZZXgT7K for ; Sun, 10 Jan 2010 21:00:17 +0000 (GMT) Received: from griffon26.kfk4ever.com (griffon26.demon.nl [82.161.57.89]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7195C7500D0 for ; Sun, 10 Jan 2010 21:00:09 +0000 (GMT) Received: by griffon26.kfk4ever.com (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 6FEA61D172D; Sun, 10 Jan 2010 22:00:23 +0100 (CET) Date: Sun, 10 Jan 2010 22:00:22 +0100 From: Maurice van der Pot To: planner-list@gnome.org Message-ID: <20100110210020.GI14547@kfk4ever.com> Mail-Followup-To: planner-list@gnome.org References: <20100110154745.GA7132@chris> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="9iyR+p8Z2cn535Lj" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20100110154745.GA7132@chris> X-URL: http://www.kfk4ever.com/ X-PGP-Key: http://www.kfk4ever.com/~griffon26/pubkey.asc Subject: Re: Planner-list How to find the help - running across systems X-BeenThere: planner-list@gnome.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.12 Precedence: list List-Id: Planner discussion list for users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 10 Jan 2010 21:00:26 -0000 --9iyR+p8Z2cn535Lj Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Sun, Jan 10, 2010 at 03:47:45PM +0000, Chris G wrote: > Shouldn't X applications (which planner is) not handle being run > on an X server as I am doing without problems? I.e. an absolutely standard client/server X setup. Other applications (e.g. terminals, synaptic and others) work perfectly normally run the same way so I think my X setup is OK. When I run 'planner' on the remote system's command line the following sequence occurs:- An incredibly long wait, like two or three minutes. The following appears in the terminal window:- wbs name start finish work duration slack cost assigned_to complete and a blank "Unnamed - Planner" window pops up. Another wait of several minutes. Finally the Planner window get contents (i.e. menus, tiled areas, etc.) but an error box appears which says:- An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for Planner. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly. Details [a button] If I click the details button I see:- Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-dBUz4UU7e2: Connection refused) This repeats hundreds of times, presumably it's the cause of the long waits. So, to the point, what's wrong and how do I fix it? The X server system has been rebooted without changing the symbptoms. I'll go and try rebooting the system where planner is running (i.e. the X client) but I somehow doubt that's going to have much effect. I'll report back to this thread if it changes or fixes anything. -- Chris Green From chris@chris.isbd.net Tue Jan 12 11:39:32 2010 Return-Path: X-Original-To: planner-list@gnome.org Delivered-To: planner-list@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C98127500B7 for ; Tue, 12 Jan 2010 11:39:32 +0000 (GMT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -6.599 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-6.599 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_00=-2.599, RCVD_IN_DNSWL_MED=-4] autolearn=ham Received: from menubar.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (menubar.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id QP6m4qSNoEHK for ; Tue, 12 Jan 2010 11:39:24 +0000 (GMT) Received: from v-smtp-auth-relay-6.gradwell.net (v-smtp-auth-relay-6.gradwell.net [79.135.125.112]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B3D4C750072 for ; Tue, 12 Jan 2010 11:39:15 +0000 (GMT) Received: from [84.45.228.40] ([84.45.228.40] helo=chris.isbd.net country=GB ident=chris^pop3#isbd^co#uk) by v-smtp-auth-relay-6.gradwell.net with esmtpa (Gradwell gwh-smtpd 1.290) id 4b4c5f4a.584f.e1 for planner-list@gnome.org; Tue, 12 Jan 2010 11:38:50 +0000 (envelope-sender ) Received: from chris by chris.isbd.net with local (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1NUf5G-0001zm-3u for planner-list@gnome.org; Tue, 12 Jan 2010 11:38:50 +0000 Date: Tue, 12 Jan 2010 11:38:50 +0000 From: Chris G To: planner-list@gnome.org Message-ID: <20100112113849.GA7528@chris> Mail-Followup-To: planner-list@gnome.org References: <20100112110229.GA7148@chris> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20100112110229.GA7148@chris> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.20 (2009-06-14) Subject: Re: Planner-list Incredibly slow startup and errors when running planner as an X client across network X-BeenThere: planner-list@gnome.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.12 Precedence: list List-Id: Planner discussion list for users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 12 Jan 2010 11:39:33 -0000 On Tue, Jan 12, 2010 at 11:02:29AM +0000, Chris G wrote: [snip my tel of woe] > > So, to the point, what's wrong and how do I fix it? As I have said before, Planner doesn't know anything about your running it remotely and it doesn't need to know either.=20 It uses X libraries to draw its UI and somewhere deep down that is translated into X messages over the network. Don't assume that running stuff remotely is a special case for the application, because it's not. In my case, I found that I was wanting to create a new task and immediately give it a name. However, the quickest method I could find to do this (using keyboard shortcuts for maximum speed) was: Ctrl-i <- insert a new task Enter <- open the task dialog Alt-n <- focus on the name entry "type name" Enter <- complete! I have played with a few options to streamline this process - and I would like to humbly propose the following enhancement to this workflow: Ctrl-i <- insert a new task Enter <- open the task dialog "type name" Enter <- complete! Attached is a patch I wrote (against 0.14.4) and tested to achieve this enhancement. It alleviates the need to type 'Alt-n' by opening the task property dialogue with focus on the Name entry when there is no existing name. If there is an existing name then the behaviour reverts to existing planner defaults. So, in summary, the attached patch significantly reduces the effort to rapidly enter plan tasks while minimising changes to the existing behaviour. I welcome feedback and advice which would help this patch be accepted into planner. best regards, Richard -- Scanned by iCritical. --=-U/j09pqyGk4F9kykOnHm Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="property_name_focus.patch" Content-Type: text/x-patch; name="property_name_focus.patch"; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 LS0tIC4vcGxhbm5lcl9vcmlnL3BsYW5uZXItMC4xNC40L3NyYy9wbGFubmVyLXRhc2stZGlhbG9n LmMJMjAwOC0wNy0yMiAxNDo0MTo0Ny4wMDAwMDAwMDAgKzAxMDANCisrKyAuL3BsYW5uZXItMC4x NC41L3NyYy9wbGFubmVyLXRhc2stZGlhbG9nLmMJMjAxMC0wMS0xOSAxNDoxNTo1My40NzM5MTYz NTcgKzAwMDANCkBAIC0yOTE1LDYgKzI5MTUsOCBAQA0KIAlHbGFkZVhNTCAgICAgKmdsYWRlOw0K IAlHdGtXaWRnZXQgICAgKmRpYWxvZzsNCiAJR3RrV2lkZ2V0ICAgICp3Ow0KKwlHdGtXaWRnZXQg ICAgKm5hbWVfZW50cnk7DQorCWNvbnN0IGdjaGFyICAqbmFtZV9jb250ZW50czsNCiAJR3RrU2l6 ZUdyb3VwICpzaXplX2dyb3VwOw0KIAlNcnBQcm9qZWN0ICAgKnByb2plY3Q7DQogCU1ycENhbGVu ZGFyICAqY2FsZW5kYXI7DQpAQCAtMzAyNyw1ICszMDI5LDEzIEBADQogCQkJCSBkaWFsb2csDQog CQkJCSAwKTsNCiAJDQorCW5hbWVfZW50cnkgPSBnbGFkZV94bWxfZ2V0X3dpZGdldCAoZ2xhZGUs ICJuYW1lX2VudHJ5Iik7DQorCW5hbWVfY29udGVudHMgPSBndGtfZW50cnlfZ2V0X3RleHQgKEdU S19FTlRSWSAobmFtZV9lbnRyeSkpOw0KKwlpZiAoKm5hbWVfY29udGVudHMgPT0gMCkgew0KKwkJ LyogaWYgdGhlIHRhc2sgZG9lcyBub3QgaGF2ZSBhIG5hbWUsIHRoZW4gDQorCQkgKiBnaXZlIHRo ZSBgTmFtZScgR3RrRW50cnkgZm9jdXMuICovDQorCQlndGtfd2lkZ2V0X2dyYWJfZm9jdXMobmFt ZV9lbnRyeSk7DQorCX0NCisNCiAJcmV0dXJuIGRpYWxvZzsNCiB9DQo= --=-U/j09pqyGk4F9kykOnHm-- From jwulf@redhat.com Tue Jan 19 21:11:31 2010 Return-Path: X-Original-To: planner-list@gnome.org Delivered-To: planner-list@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6F4D9750077 for ; Tue, 19 Jan 2010 21:11:31 +0000 (GMT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -6.599 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-6.599 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_00=-2.599, RCVD_IN_DNSWL_MED=-4] autolearn=ham Received: from menubar.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (menubar.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id tm3HjdvaJVYk for ; Tue, 19 Jan 2010 21:11:26 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mx1.redhat.com (mx1.redhat.com [209.132.183.28]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0DF00750070 for ; Tue, 19 Jan 2010 21:11:17 +0000 (GMT) Received: from int-mx03.intmail.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com (int-mx03.intmail.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com [10.5.11.16]) by mx1.redhat.com (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id o0JLBG0V011724 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=OK) for ; Tue, 19 Jan 2010 16:11:16 -0500 Received: from gaura.bne.redhat.com (gaura.bne.redhat.com [10.64.0.125]) by int-mx03.intmail.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id o0JLBDqA016495 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO) for ; Tue, 19 Jan 2010 16:11:15 -0500 Message-ID: <4B561FF2.6020608@redhat.com> Date: Wed, 20 Jan 2010 07:11:14 +1000 From: Joshua Wulf User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091209 Fedora/3.0-4.fc12 Thunderbird/3.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: planner Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.67 on 10.5.11.16 Subject: Planner-list Planner Development - still active? FWIW, I also experience that it is not as fast as it might have been to enter new tasks. In my case I have projects that are more informal (marketing plans and advertising schedules) as opposed to highly structured projects (construction and engineering). It is often easier to start by entering a list of tasks off the top of my head and then to reorganize those tasks, create and assign resources to the tasks and then to see what dates are feasible given the available resources vs tasks. This can be somewhat tedious and time-consuming in Planner and any speedup of this process must be considered critical. It would be great to see Planner getting some more love. Please don't
get me wrong: I am very grateful to Alexandre, Maurice and all others

Problem is that IMHO Planner is a strategic app for Linux, because it's
the default app for project management, which is a necessity for me and
many project managers who use Linux as their desktop. I rely on it
heavily to plan our sprints, and it's a pity new versions take so long
to come out, and to see some basic (annoying) bugs last for too long,
or some usability issues that could probably be fixed without much
effort if more manpower was available.

Again, this is not at all a complaint directed at the developers, but
instead a "Phew! Maybe now these guys will get some help" ;-) It's nice

it is welcome by the developers.

This is why people are encouraged to actively participate on the mailing list, help out in bugzilla, submit/review patches, etc. Naturally this takes time. At the moment there are only a few of us and I'd say that we have a little over 1 active developer. And patches, even perfect ones, will still need to be reviewed before they can be committed. So it's not that your patches are not being accepted, it's just that we haven't gotten to them yet.
