Unfortunately, not all distros are that wise. Other distros will decide not to split it or split it differently exacerbating the problem with figuring out missing dependencies (e.g. pkg-config complains about missing gnome-disk-utility-libs, what Debian package should you install?). --=20 mvh Bj=F6rn From ak-47@gmx.net Mon Jun 1 20:56:04 2009 Return-Path: X-Original-To: release-team@gnome.org Delivered-To: release-team@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 48AE375028A for ; Mon, 1 Jun 2009 20:56:04 +0000 (GMT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -1.98 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-1.98 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_00=-2.599, RCVD_IN_SORBS_WEB=0.619] X-Amavis-OS-Fingerprint: Linux 2.6 (newer, 3) (up: 4012 hrs), (distance 19, link: ethernet/modem), [213.165.64.20] Received: from menubar.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (menubar.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id GRzeIat7XOyf for ; Mon, 1 Jun 2009 20:55:56 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.gmx.net (mail.gmx.net [213.165.64.20]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with SMTP id D27E8750125 for ; Mon, 1 Jun 2009 20:55:47 +0000 (GMT) Received: (qmail invoked by alias); 01 Jun 2009 20:55:44 -0000 Received: from g1.blanicka25.net (EHLO [10.0.0.5]) [82.208.42.129] by mail.gmx.net (mp056) with SMTP; 01 Jun 2009 22:55:44 +0200 X-Authenticated: #726810 X-Provags-ID: V01U2FsdGVkX1/wKHgub2DwGGVfHvEApLxiedUgiuRumOrwP8HxbM 8kTfxhShv+Tapg Subject: Re: Request for external dependancy libmapi version update. Modules which were proposed for inclusion should try to follow the unstable schedule so everyone can test them. Please make sure that your tarballs will be uploaded before Monday 23:59 UTC: tarballs uploaded later than that will probably be too late to get in 2.27.3. If you are not able to make a tarball before this deadline or if you think you'll be late, please send a mail to the release team and we'll find someone to roll the tarball for you! For more information about 2.27, the full schedule, the official module lists and the proposed module lists, please see our colorful 2.27 page: http://www.gnome.org/start/unstable For a quick overview of the GNOME schedule, please see: http://live.gnome.org/Schedule Thanks, From vuntz@gnome.org Fri Jun 12 16:33:10 2009 Return-Path: X-Original-To: release-team@gnome.org Delivered-To: release-team@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 61764750140 for ; Fri, 12 Jun 2009 16:33:10 +0000 (GMT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -2.522 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.522 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_00=-2.599, TW_BG=0.077] X-Amavis-OS-Fingerprint: Linux 2.6 (newer, 1) (up: 2653 hrs), (distance 21, link: ethernet/modem), [82.240.102.222] Received: from menubar.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (menubar.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id owzOAIESqYr9 for ; Fri, 12 Jun 2009 16:33:02 +0000 (GMT) Received: from fennas.vuntz.net (fennas.vuntz.net [82.240.102.222]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6F0B0750127 for ; Fri, 12 Jun 2009 16:32:52 +0000 (GMT) Received: by fennas.vuntz.net (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 837381126FF; Fri, 12 Jun 2009 18:32:50 +0200 (CEST) Date: Fri, 12 Jun 2009 18:32:50 +0200 From: Vincent Untz To: release-team@gnome.org Subject: Meeting minutes (May 10th) Message-ID: <20090612163250.GR10754@vuntz.net> Mail-Followup-To: release-team@gnome.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.18 (2008-05-17) X-BeenThere: release-team@gnome.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.10 Precedence: list List-Id: GNOME Release Team discussions and coordination List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 12 Jun 2009 16:33:10 -0000 Wow, I didn't realize I was so late for the minutes. Apologies for this. The short summary: fredp and lucasr have action items :-) Vincent ========================= Attendance ========== Present: Andre Klapper (andre) Frederic Crozat (fcrozat) Frederic Peters (fpeters) Karsten Bräckelmann (guenther) Lucas Rocha (lucasr) Matthias Clasen (mclasen) Vincent Untz (vuntz) -- taking minutes Missing: Kjartan Maraas (kmaraas) Olav Vitters (bkor) Agenda ====== + release team membership changes + looking back at the 2.26 cycle + release assignments + platform cleanup status + 3.0 roadmapping ACTIONS ======= Andre: + announce libglade deprecation (DONE) FrédéricP: + discuss with Gustavo a plan for gnome-python and deprecated part of the platform + mail binding maintainers with potential options to remove deprecated API (separate module, --disable-deprecated, deprecating warning at runtime, mentions in release announcements) Lucas: + setup initial wiki page for 3.0 roadmap + maybe announce the roadmap process change for 2.28 & 3.0 Release Team membership changes =============================== Everybody is happy to continue his share of work in the release team for the next cycle. Looking back at the 2.26 cycle ============================== There were mainly two things: + the session saving got in late. Maintainers were guilty there. + module inclusion decision coming too late during the cycle - this was initially a comment from Bastien - andre mentions this has been changed for 2.29 already and we should probably keep the change - discussion on why we take so long: we're waiting for feedback and improvements in the modules - two potential solutions to make the decision process a bit easier: * really make sure a module gets proposed when it's ready (modulo the integration with other modules) * open the module proposal period earlier (between .90 and .92), and then announce the decision between .1 and .3 - lucasr notes that it's a good thing to have one announcement with all decisions, instead of fragmented decisions where we'd accept/reject a module from time to time Release assignments =================== May 20 2.26.2 vuntz May 27 2.27.2 lucasr Jun 17 2.27.3 fcrozat Jun 29 2.26.3 lucasr Jul 15 2.27.4 fredp Jul 29 2.27.5 vuntz Aug 12 2.27.90 fcrozat Aug 26 2.27.91 fredp Sep 09 2.27.92 vuntz Matthias missed the part where we assigned release and mentioned he could do one if someone wants to get rid of one. Platform cleanup status ======================= Andre sent a mail abut this: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2009-May/msg00174.html One issue is the session management: + people copy EggSmClient to get rid of libgnome + ideally, GTK+ bug 79285 would get fixed + mclasen notes that the GTK+ part depends on dbus support in glib + this should be ready for 3.0 (so early 2.29) Another issue is deprecation in bindings: gnomeprint and gnome-vfs are deprecated in the platform but still in the python and mono bindings. Gustavo proposed a solution for gnome-python: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2009-April/msg00437.html It appears creating a separate module is not his prefered solution. fredp mentions the DeprecationWarning warning support in python, and the option of a --disable-deprecated-modules configure flag. We agree to officially deprecate libglade. 3.0 roadmapping =============== Lucas proposes to create a simple process based on topics/goals, where we'd have a wiki page with milestones for each topic/goal. There wouldn't be a roadmap call for each module, so we can focus on the big picture. This would bring more visibility and make it easier to check the status. Some examples: + new website could be part of the marketing goal + mallard could be part of "revamp help system" goal People agreed on the idea, and to focus on this, we drop the current roadmap process for 2.28 and 3.0. Next meeting ============ Hopefully, a GUADEC meeting will be possible. A meeting is already scheduled for end of July for the module decisions, but having most work done during GUADEC would probably be a good thing. Already proposed agenda items for next meeting: + Discuss whether to open call for new modules for 2.29 around 2.27.90 -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. One thing that was discussed at FOSDEM is that we don't need to make the apps "official" GNOME apps to promote them. Eg, we could well put pitivi on the front page of www.gnome.org to say how much it's rocking. Maybe it'd be worth telling the developers that if they don't want to be part of official GNOME, they are still part of the GNOME world and we'd love to be able to work with them on promotion. The idea is to have a more concrete set of goals for 3.0 and bring more clarity and transparency to the 3.0 general plans. Instead of doing a current per-module roadmapping process, I'm trying to use a more topic-based approach. I think "Release Management" could be one of those topics. This could be a nice way to plan the release management changes we want to get done by 3.0. So, here's the information I'm looking for: 1. Summarize in one sentence/paragraph the goal(s) for Release Management in GNOME 3.0 2. What are the goals for Release Management in GNOME 3.0? Some general guidelines: - For 2, I'm expeting a simple bullet list; - The items should be as concise and concrete as possible; - Ideally, the goals listed here should have a good level of feasibility. Try to avoid "blue sky" type of ideas with no people actually backing them; - Try to split those in two milestones: 2.28 and 2.30; - It would be nice to have the roadmap by June 19. We can include our ideas for re-scoping the desktop module set, app certification process, etc. Other ideas? Anyway, I think it would be a good exercise for us to try to come up with a concrete plan for 3.0. Let me know if you have any questions. Lemme start right away, with my thought/proposal. I wanted to do the following. - Continue Evolution 2.26 as stable series till 3.0 comes out. - Treat Evolution 2.28 as a intermediate milestone for GNOME/Evolution 3.0 - Continue releasing Evolution 2.26.x (Evolution 2.26.5/6/7...) series as stable releases for GNOME 2.28.1/2/3 instead of releasing Evolution 2.28.1/2/3. Its mainly this and the reasons to follow. I expect lot of rewrites, dbus port merge, bonobo deprecation (kill bonobo merge). etc. I don't think, Evolution 2.28 can be stable, unless I postpone these tasks which might merge late in 2.28 cycle to really 2.29.x. But postponing merges at times, doesn't really mean that it will finish in time, when the targets are relaxed/moved to 2.29.x I really wanted to take up these merges even though they are late, and go ahead for a stable 3.0. The main difference it makes is that, I can get over these tasks asap with out looking for a interim-stability series and aim good for a stable Evolution for GNOME 3.0. It gives a good window IMHO. Thoughts on this? Secondly, Evolution uses GNOME canvas in and around every UI. I wanted to know the future direction/migration path, haven't seen one before. It gives a good window IMHO. I'll add that with every major branch merge we have to allow sufficient time to clean up the inevitable mess. It's really hard to do this under a string and UI freeze, or even the announcement period. That leaves us with a relatively short time window per six-month cycle to get these things in. That's why, for example, I set 2.27.3 as a hard deadline for merging the Bonobo removal in time for 2.28. If I miss that, which I will, we punt to 2.29.1. As things stand, we simply have more merges lined up than we have merge windows before GNOME 3. So we need to destabilize things for a bit longer than usual in order to meet all our 3.0 milestones in time. You might call the stable Evolution releases "2.28.x" but create them from the gnome-2-26 branch. On the other hand that is confusing if you were up to continue calling the unstable series for 3.0 "2.27.x". I somehow miss the last reply from Srini on this thread though I see it in web. So replying back to this. I like the idea of not branching and continue to port the code for killing bonobo from eds and evolution. But we also need to consider some patches which have added API and some string changes. There might not be many UI changes, but still there might be some useful ones. I don have the entire list now as we have not discussed/looked over them yet. I have not yet got the GSoc EDS optimization patches, but if I can get them over soon and if its good enough I would love to push them to stable branch along with calendar cache rewrite (http://www.go-evolution.org/Evo2.28) (quoting one case). Thinking about the freezes API/ABI/Feature freezes coming along in a months time. What about branching for gnome-2-27 immediately after that and starting to merge the kill bonobo stuffs ? This would mean we will not need to think about the merging important patches with freeze breaks into stable. So instead of 9 months we would have 8 months. - Chenthill. > > > I expect lot of rewrites, dbus port merge, bonobo deprecation (kill > > bonobo merge). etc. I don't think, Evolution 2.28 can be stable, unless > > I postpone these tasks which might merge late in 2.28 cycle to really > > 2.29.x. > [...] > > Thoughts on this? > > After some bad experiences with kill-summary bugs in 2.24.x I agree with > your proposal to continue 2.27.x for the next 9 months and kind of drop > 2.28.x. > > > Secondly, Evolution uses GNOME canvas in and around every UI. And Evolution branching early for gnome-2-28 (e.g. when the first freezes start) sounds like the best plan to me. I just like to ask the Evolution team to please decide on their schedule plans early and to communicate them properly so every developers knows (as it might be good to be conservative with committing bigger changes to master if everybody knows that branching for gnome-2-28 will happen "soon". People can wait and commit the bigger changes to master after branching for gnome-2-28.) Still waiting for release-team members with a better knowledge of history (Kjartan maybe?) that can explain the decision to deprecate libgnomecanvas. I see two options: * Keep libgnomecanvas deprecated in GNOME 3 and hence allow Evolution 3 to use it. * Have libgnomecanvas removed in GNOME 3 and Evolution include it. Also see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=571742#c6 . Because of the complexity of this task I currently favor option 1. IMO definitely give libgnomecanvas the lowest priority in cleaning up the Evolution deps/code. Other opinions? Silence means I will bring this up at the GUADEC r-t meeting anyway. ;-) andre -- mailto:ak-47@gmx.net | failed http://www.iomc.de/ | http://blogs.gnome.org/aklapper From ak-47@gmx.net Sun Jun 21 18:49:56 2009 Return-Path: X-Original-To: release-team@gnome.org Delivered-To: release-team@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4D57975002E for ; Sun, 21 Jun 2009 18:49:56 +0000 (GMT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -1.18 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-1.18 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_00=-2.599, L_P0F_UNKN=0.8, RCVD_IN_SORBS_WEB=0.619] X-Amavis-OS-Fingerprint: UNKNOWN [S4:45:1:60:M1460,S,T,N,W8:.:?:?] (up: 4804 hrs), (link: ethernet/modem), [213.165.64.20] Received: from menubar.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (menubar.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id W5mi6hhzwmjo for ; Sun, 21 Jun 2009 18:49:48 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.gmx.net (mail.gmx.net [213.165.64.20]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with SMTP id D047E7501B7 for ; Sun, 21 Jun 2009 18:49:39 +0000 (GMT) Received: (qmail invoked by alias); 21 Jun 2009 18:49:37 -0000 Received: from g1.blanicka25.net (EHLO [10.0.0.6]) [82.208.42.129] by mail.gmx.net (mp060) with SMTP; 21 Jun 2009 20:49:37 +0200 X-Authenticated: #726810 X-Provags-ID: V01U2FsdGVkX1//UdRhVOz/aREgm65x0XNjrlhSg6PCd/m1tzMjhS QSFbwI3uPD7DcL Subject: Re: GNOME 3.0 Roadmap - Release Management From: Andre Klapper To: release-team@gnome.org In-Reply-To: <31a62e6f0906141122n507d4ae8iaa8c6ffd8bbc4c10@mail.gmail.com> References: <31a62e6f0906141122n507d4ae8iaa8c6ffd8bbc4c10@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain Date: Sun, 21 Jun 2009 20:49:36 +0200 Message-Id: <1245610176.25482.14.camel@localhost.localdomain> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.24.5 (2.24.5-1.fc10) Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Y-GMX-Trusted: 0 X-FuHaFi: 0.57 X-BeenThere: release-team@gnome.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.10 Precedence: list List-Id: GNOME Release Team discussions and coordination List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 21 Jun 2009 18:49:56 -0000 Am Sonntag, den 14.06.2009, 19:22 +0100 schrieb Lucas Rocha: > 1. Maybe partially out of scope, but what I personally want to see in GNOME 3 is * some applications (probably "blessed" if we switch to new modulesets): tracker, gnome-scan, banshee and/or rhythmbox, maybe gnome-shell, maybe gnome-zeitgeist, maybe gnome-do * an fd.o thumbnailing spec implementation * higher quality by somehow automated or required http://live.gnome.org/GnomeGoals/DistCheck * a great gnome.org webpage (2.28 goal) * better task-oriented documentation by initial Mallard implementations * rethinking autoconf/automake / waf (I only know that there's complaints, I don't have enough knowledge of this field) andre -- mailto:ak-47@gmx.net | failed http://www.iomc.de/ | http://blogs.gnome.org/aklapper From pchenthill@novell.com Mon Jun 22 07:11:05 2009 Return-Path: X-Original-To: release-team@gnome.org Delivered-To: release-team@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 74D027500C8 for ; Mon, 22 Jun 2009 07:11:05 +0000 (GMT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -4.544 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-4.544 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[AWL=1.978, BAYES_00=-2.599, RCVD_IN_DNSWL_MED=-4, TW_BG=0.077] X-Amavis-OS-Fingerprint: Novell Netware 6 SP3, (distance 13, link: unknown-1390), [137.65.248.127] Received: from menubar.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (menubar.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 4KkA5D1CISt3 for ; Mon, 22 Jun 2009 07:10:56 +0000 (GMT) Received: from lucius.provo.novell.com (lucius.provo.novell.com [137.65.248.127]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EF1B8750050 for ; Mon, 22 Jun 2009 07:10:47 +0000 (GMT) Received: from INET-PRV1-MTA by lucius.provo.novell.com with Novell_GroupWise; Mon, 22 Jun 2009 01:10:45 -0600 Message-Id: <4A3EDA12020000DE00066650@lucius.provo.novell.com> X-Mailer: Novell GroupWise Internet Agent 8.0.0 Date: Mon, 22 Jun 2009 01:10:42 -0600 From: "P Chenthill" To: Subject: Re: Evolution thoughts for GNOME 3.0 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline Cc: mbarnes@redhat.com, kmaraas@broadpark.no, Srinivasa Ragavan , release-team@gnome.org X-BeenThere: release-team@gnome.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.10 Precedence: list List-Id: GNOME Release Team discussions and coordination List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 22 Jun 2009 07:11:05 -0000 On Sat, 2009-06-20 at 20:54 +0200, Andre Klapper wrote: > Hi Srini & Chen, >=20 > Am Samstag, den 20.06.2009, 12:04 +0530 schrieb Chenthill: > > But we also need to consider some patches which have added API and = some > > string changes. Modules which were proposed for inclusion should try to follow the unstable schedule so everyone can test them. Please make sure that your tarballs will be uploaded before Monday 23:59 UTC: tarballs uploaded later than that will probably be too late to get in 2.26.3. If you are not able to make a tarball before this deadline or if you think you'll be late, please send a mail to the release team and we'll find someone to roll the tarball for you! For more information about 2.27, the full schedule, the official module lists and the proposed module lists, please see our colorful 2.27 page: http://www.gnome.org/start/unstable For a quick overview of the GNOME schedule, please see: http://live.gnome.org/Schedule Thanks, From hadess@hadess.net Fri Jun 26 10:11:50 2009 Return-Path: X-Original-To: release-team@gnome.org Delivered-To: release-team@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BFE607504BC; Fri, 26 Jun 2009 10:11:50 +0000 (GMT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -3.765 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-3.765 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[AWL=0.615, BAYES_00=-2.599, RCVD_IN_DNSWL_MED=-4, TVD_SPACE_RATIO=2.219] X-Amavis-OS-Fingerprint: Linux 2.6 (newer, 3) (NAT!)
