gtranslator alternative

Hello everybody!
I've compiled my brand-new g2 system and now i want to help translating gnome, but:
1.) gtranslator 0.41 doesn't work (see bugreport)
2.) gtranslator 0.51 doesn't build (Makefile.in rejects a diff, i get a LIBS_GAL error although gal is installed etc.)
So which possibilities do i have except using a (not very sophesticated ;-) texteditor to translate some strings?
