Re: Localisation the "Location" file (gweather, evolution)

As noted, there is a Translation Project domain for regions in the world
which is fairly complete, at
http://www2.iro.umontreal.ca/translation/registry.cgi?domain=iso_3166_2
Obviously it follows the standard ISO-3166, Part 2.
However, weather is too variable to fit to regions of a country. In
addition, it would be a lot of work to map airports to regions.

My recommendation would be to create a huge POT file with all the
airport names and localise based on need. This will keep the resulting
.mo file for each language quite small, as there is no requirement to
translate all airport names.
This .pot file should not be listed on the Statistics page because there
would be no need to be completely translated.

AFAIK, for several versions, Evolution had done exactly this; for the
Summary page it included functionality of gweather and you could
localise the name of the cities (airport). This was the time when
evolution.po had over 5000 messages and people were complaining because
it was impossible to get %100 on the stats.
I just noticed the latest Evolution does not have a Summary and I
suppose it does not have a gweather component.

Having the city name appear in the local language is an essential
eye-candy for people starting to use GNOME and makes them more attached
to the desktop.

If you believe we should go through this direction, please say so. Then
we start a feature request on bugzilla counting the hands.
