What about using the window manager for that? It already exist, some
wm do it by default, others do not. IE, Sawfish, the most common GNOME
wm, does not include it. But with a module, it does, and using nice
font and colours. People even can give names to desktops in some wm.

Just that many thing already exist, but not in default config. ;]
