[Usability] Head matter [ a timeout from the debating ;) ]

Hi all,

So, I was wondering: what was the first use of pseudo-3D appearance for
buttons and other objects in UI toolkits? I remember System 6 and (am fairly
sure) System 7 had 2D rounded rectangles for buttons without addon
enhancements, whilst Windows 3.1 had bevels on buttons but none on other
objects.

Despite my memories of getting "cool hacks that made stuff 3D" (like Xaw3D,
various Windows things pre-Win95 and all the Mac addons that finally brought
on the Copeland look), the real-world 3D look has definitely enhanced
usability, when not overdone.

Anyone have good references, or stories with regards to this?
