Long-term, I agree that this would be the best
solution. Short-term, though, it seems something quick
could be done to finish off window manager integration

without introducing much in the way of structural
alterations to GNOME2. Thanks to GConf and Metacity,
GNOME2 is so close to window manager integration. All
that's left is to either add a little capplet or alter
a current one.
