The most frequent operation (tabswitching) should probable have the
easiest shortcut. I think global bindings (by windowmanagers) should
intercept as few key combinations as possibel to avoid "stealing" them
from applications.

Metacity for example has very sane default bindings with the exception
of <alt>-<left mouse button> to move windows. It breaks selection in
Gimp. <control>-<alt>-<left mouse button> would be nicer.

This is my keybindings listed in order of use frequency:

          <alt>-[0-9]    switches documents/tabs in focused app.
<control>-<alt>-[0-9]    switches workspace in windowmanager.
<control>-<alt>-<F[0-9]> switches VC in the linux console.

The keystrokes is kind of similar for kind of similar functions.
I have not yet found an application that makes use of
<control>-<alt>-something, so hopefully they don't break anything.
