[Usability]Desktop Backgrounds

Looking back over this archive there appear to be
several requests over the years for GNOME to handle
different wallpaper/backgrounds on a per desktop
basis.

One reason this has not been so urgent, and consequently
why it's never be implemented is that the functionality
is present in window managers like Enlightenment and
WMaker.

However since Sawmill would appear now to be the de facto
window manager (I say this only since it's distributed by
Ximian and Sun), and desktop backgrounds are explicitly ruled
out by Sawmill as coming under its control, it would appear
that this functionality is needed under GNOME.

While I don't want to start on the merits of window managers
and where the responsibility for this functionality should
reside, I do want to point out that this requirement has
fallen between the cracks.

So is this likely now to be done?
